EU Sport Forum 2018: two intense days of discussing sport in Europe
On 22 and 23 March the EU Sport Forum 2018 took place in Sofia on the occasion of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council.
Hosted by Tibor Navracsics, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, the event gathered 380 participants representing sport organisations, policy making bodies, EU institutions and Member States.
ENGSO was represented there with a great delegation, including President, Carlos Cardoso, Secretary General, Stefan Bergh, Executive Committee member, Ilva Ciemite, Policy Director, Heidi Pekkola and Office Director, Marie Denitton. Several representatives of ENGSO Youth were also present at the event, including Committee member Bence Garamvölgyi and Operations Manager, Dóra Faragó.
At the Forum key topics were discussed with influential speakers on the panels. The topics included the role of sport in international relations, the impact of the Olympic Games on the environment, the role of sport in fighting climate change, in promoting European values and in the promotion of gender equality in sport.
More discussions were held around regional development, innovation, the latest policy developments, the transfer of players and the ISU case as well.
Our Secretary General, Stefan Bergh made a thought-provoking introductory speech in the session entitled “Women in sport: breaking the glass ceiling”. In his speech he posed the question, why are there still structures, culture and norms in sport which attract more boys and men. With his thoughts he gave a great starting tone to the session moderated by Piara Powar, Fare Network, Executive Director. In the panel four exceptional speakers shared their thoughts on the topic, Rikke Ronholt Albertsen, Co-founder of Global Goals World Cup by Eir Soccer, Gerd Kanter, Chair of the EOC Athletes' Commission, Emma Sykes, UEFA’s Women's Football Development Manager and Natalia Orive, Vice-President of EU Athletes.
The EU Sport Forum was a great opportunity not only to exchange thoughts at the sessions, but to continue talking and networking over an extraordinary dinner at the Arena Armeec Hall, Sofia’s multi-purpose indoor arena and over the #BeActive morning activities.
It has been a phenomenal event, and we would like to thank the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council for organising it.
