ENGSO policy on EU-affairs 2004 - 2005
Political direction
AIM: To safeguard the specificity of sport, the role of sport and the free and independent sports organizations built on democratic values – national as well as international – in the European society and in the EU context. ENGSO should in this respect still support actively the efforts of the European sporting movement demanding for a legal base of Sport in the future European Constitution (sport article). ENGSO shall: Ø play an active part in the discussion about the structure and competences of a future bigger Europe, and shall as part of the European Sports Movement, participate in representing its interests within the follow-up of the European Convention. In this regard, the members of ENGSO should also be active on national level and report to the EU working group, which coordinates the work. Ø continue to, within the EU-context, work for the appreciation of the social significance of sport, i.e. the role of sport in the European society which contains the social, educational and cultural functions inherent in sport and the major role sport thus plays in the lives of the people of Europe. Sports is especially important in promoting good health, for ethnical and social integration, for educational aspects and for young people. Ø underline the important role of sport
- for nation-building and community-building Ø stress, that regular physical activity offers the potential of substantial benefits for health and well-being for both individuals of all ages in all cultures as well as for societies. Within that context we should continue to work for the political recognition of the social significance of sport. Ø consider the new demands of our time and societies, with the valorization of human rights, communication and closeness of different cultures, a step further has to be done towards broadest participation of European citizens and extended cooperation between individuals, sport organisations and government institutions at all levels, also strengthening links with other social groups (non-profit and profit-oriented) related to sport. |
